Description: The phenomenon of radioactivity is exploited in some sectors of medicine, industry and scientific research, in which real radioactive sources are used, in solid or liquid form, containing radionuclides that are chosen for different purposes according to their characteristics: half-life, type and energy of the radiation emitted. The legislation also provides how these sources must be managed when they become waste (or scrap in the case of sources incorporated into metal matrices). In some cases, however, they can escape, intentionally or not, from proper management, and can end up, in fact, among ordinary waste or scrap.
